February 6
Track laying this week consisted of putting in the shims, roadbed, and ties for the transition track from Lower Blackhawk to Upper Blackhawk. In addition, I put in about a third of the shims for Upper Blackhawk, but I haven't updated the status because I'm still in the middle of it. Lastly, I did more spiking on the Randolph Mill/Chamberlain Works tracks - with luck I'll finish them this week. Also painted more ties as the transition track took most of my available stock.
The detail brass and custom Delrin centers arrived this week from PSC and so I worked filing some down to be sure they'd fit the tires I'm using. The centers I bought are C-16s (which are for scale 36" tires) but with work, they'll fit in the scale 33" tires I extracted from the NWSL wheel sets.
I discovered that the drill press I was planning to use on drilling out the centers has too much tolerance. Fortunately, I have lots of extra centers, so I've been setting up my newly acquired second (or third) hand Unimat as a drill press for future drilling.
