The Dance Pavilion at Beaver Brook

  • Scaffold base is cut from one half inch cabinet grade plywood.
  • Support Points for where the model contacts "ground" are made using quarter inch dowels, cut to length and mounted in pre-drilled holes (see plans). Dowels that will be supporting circular posts have post mounting holes center drilled on a lathe.
  • Scale one foot circular posts are cut from eighth inch dowel stock to length (see plans), pre-weathered, and mounted dry
  • Weathering consists of staining with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, multiple coats of a thin India Ink/Alcohol wash, and multiple washes of 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • Ground spatter weathering with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade
  • Use clear acrylic sheet and bullet level to verify flatness of post tops, adjusting individual posts as needed.
  • The forty two post truss supports are cut to length from scale 2"x6" stock (see plans). Each piece is weathered by staining with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, washing with multiple coats of an India Ink/Alcohol mix, washing with multiple coats of 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water. Lastly, ground spatter weathering with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade
  • Deviations from uniformity driven by prototype photo(s) and plans
  • Main Joists are cut from scale 4"x6" stock and then weathered by staining with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine.
  • Cross Joists are cut from scale 3"x6" stock, fit and then weathered by staining with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine.
  • The lower fascia is made by cutting scale 2"x12" stock and then staining with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, washing with multiple coats of an India Ink/Alcohol mix, washing with multiple coats of 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water. Lastly, ground spatter weathering with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade.
  • Level is checked with clear acrylic sheet and bullet level.
  • Octagonal corner posts are formed from 6"x6" stock and cut to 12.5' in length
  • Studs are cut to 12.5' from 2"x4"
  • Caps cut from 4"x6" stock
  • Pieces stained with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, assembled and then the outside washed with multiple coats of 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • Octagonal center post formed from 8"x10" stock and cut to 14.25' in length.
  • Floor boards are formed from 2"x12" pieces, individually stained with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, and notched to fit around corner posts and studs.
  • Floor assembly works from outside in, with final pieces fit to the center post.
  • After assembly, weather cracks with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade.
  • Outside nailing boards are cut from 1"x12" while inside nailing boards are cut from 2"x4" (see plans).
  • Wainscoting is 1"x4" and top hand rails are 2"x10", each stained with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine.
  • Outside wainscoting weathered with coats of India ink/Alcohol wash and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • After assembly, weather inside wainscoting and outside ground spatter with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade. Outside wainscoting weathered with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Tint.
  • Braces are constructed from 2"x4"s, fascia from 1"x12"s and back wall from 1"x6"s:
    • Stain with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine
    • Outer surface weathered with India ink/Alcohol wash and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water
  • Overlap braces according to drawings
  • Weather inside of wall with Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade
  • Frame roof using 3"x6" for rafters and cantilevers, and 2"x6" for joists (see drawings), stained with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine.
  • Flag pole begins as a scale 31' piece of 1/8" dowel, turned down to a tapered profile for the top scale 2'. The bottom scale 6" is cut to fit in the space formed by the roof rafters, and the base is shaped as an octagonal using a draw plate (see plans). Flag Pole then eathered with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, India ink/Alcohol wash, and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • Pole cap is a chain ball inserted into a 1/16" hole and the top painted Polly Scale Grimy Black.
  • Boards are random weathered 1"x4", 1"x6", 1"x8", 1"x10" and 1"x12"
  • Edge battens are 1"x2" and corner battens are 1"x4"
  • All pieces weathered with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, India ink/Alcohol wash, and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • Upper landing framed in with weathered 2"x6" and decked with weathered 2"x12". Weathered 2"x4" used for hand rails and posts (note mitered corner).
  • All pieces weathered with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, India ink/Alcohol wash, and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • Staircase stringers cut from 2"x12" lumber
  • 2"x4" lumber used for stringer supports
  • Lower landing framing from 2"x6"
  • Lower landing supports are 6"x6"
  • All pieces weathered with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, India ink/Alcohol wash, and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
  • Ground spatter modeled using Pan Pastel's Burnt Sienna Shade.
Stairs cut from 2"x12" lumber and weathered with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, India ink/Alcohol wash, and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
Hand rails and posts cut from 2"x4" and weathered with Dr. Ben's Natural Pine, India ink/Alcohol wash, and 10% Flat White Acrylic/90% water.
